There’s an 0 in the middle so we should have a Peugeot called after today.

We have, in fact, two. The first one was made from 1932 to 1936 and the second (and current) one is a developing market special sharing the platform of the 208, Citroen C3 and DS3. Let’s take a look at the historical 301.

As was the fashion of the time you could get a wide variety of bodies, such as this Eclipse coupé:

Kinja'd!!!

All models had the common feature of a 1.5 litre engine producing a claimed 35 bhp and rather modest performance - the high and heavy taxi would be lucky to get to 70 kmh. Then again, it was one of the few cars at the time to have independent front suspension, 12v electrics and an electric starter, albeit with a crank handle as well. No synchromesh for any of the three gears though, so you were double declutching.

The taxi had extra foldable seats in the middle which were called strapontins, a wonderful name which is still used for foldable seats on the Paris Métro.
